Durham Town Hall

Discover the unique history of Durham from the 14th Century to the present day.

Durham Town Hall

The Town Hall has been central to Durham's history since 1350 and has opened its doors to the public following refurbishment work. Now everyone can discover its rich history and hidden stories. Audio guides, interactive information points and short films help you to explore this extraordinary building and the remarkable individuals who helped shape the city.

Learn about the powerful Prince Bishops, the evolution of local government and the historic and ongoing roles of the Mayor and the Mayor's Bodyguard. Since the 14th century the Trade Guilds and Freemen of Durham have met in the Guildhall, a tradition they continue to this day. Other displays showcase colourful local characters such as Joseph Boruwlaski (1739-1837), the three foot tall 'Little Count' who retired to Durham in 1790 after performing at the grandest royal courts of Europe.
